I haven't played these games, but death as a game mechanic always fascinated me. I'll make sure to check these out :)
One other game that uses death as a mechanic, which I'll be covering in my next post, is NieR. Death doesn't add any mechanical value to the game, but it's more of a narrative driver, which I find very interesting!
I only played Outward for a little bit, but it confused me and frightened me. I always feel an interest to go back to it with a buddy of mine, but I'll see.
And I saw a whole video on Pathologic, and while the narrative looks cool, the game looks so, so very unforgiving. Maybe I'll give it a shot with the third entry.
This is the first time I see you're working on a visual novel! I've been thinking on making one, too. What engine are you using, and what is it about?
Both Outward and Pathologic 2 try their best to make everything inconvenient for the player. You either hate it or love to hate it. I personally love when games make me suffer to progress, but it's definitely not for everyone.
I'm using Unity, which is probably too much for a text game, but there are couple of highly useful assets that you can use. People generally go for Ren'py for these kind of games. Which engine are you planning to use?

Agreed! Nier Automata is one of my favorite games and I love how it uses death in the story.

My game is called Herald of the Mists, you can check it out on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2972310/Herald_of_the_Mists/

Ren'py, but your game doesn't look like a visual novel, or at least what I'd call one. Looks pretty cool.
Very nice and to the point. :)
Glad you like it!
Death means to munch more quarters from pockets.
Glad you like it!
Great example. Souls and rogue-likes (such as Hades) are other genres that I wanted to include in the article but didn't have enough time to do so.
