I'm not sure this applies universally in games (or maybe I need to spend more time thinking about my favorite video game stories now), but I will 100% agree that these are definitely winning traits that definitely help a character make a good impression. I definitely think that even if a character, especially a protagonist, doesn't meet all three, they NEED to be proactive, and have at least one of the other two.
Agreed. This mostly applies to games that has "conventional" storytelling. But games are not limited to conventional methods. Many convey their stories through mechanics and other design elements.
Oh yeah, that's also a great point. Players are a lot less concerned with those three points when it comes to, say, dark souls, or choice based rpgs where the player character is just a blank slate.
I just personally can't help thinking of Lightning from FFXIII who had 0 save the cat moments, but who rose above an otherwise loathed cast. Possibly because she actually seemed competent, unlike the rest of them
Nice post and really cool soundtrack.
Glad you liked it :) Shogun itself is also really cool if you are into historical fiction.
